"I'm moving to another town, so don't try to look for me. You'll find someone else, Jim; just treat her better than you did me. Try not to fawn over her and look so needy. Be a man. And good luck with your life."
The message ended and the regular television programming came on. It was the news.
"In the downtown area of San Francisco, riots entered their third day, with no sign of stopping. Half the city is on fire or in ruins. The protestors are demanding real food and no more forced evacuations to the Moon colony. In other news, Lexus is recalling all Lexus 6000s built in the last two years. Problems have been developing with their central processors-"
Jim shut it off. She really was gone. She meant it. She wasn't coming back. He tossed the phrases around in his head, seeing how much his mind grasped that they were true, seeing how each made him feel. He expected the pang of pain and sorrow, but there was nothing. It would come later, of that he had no doubt.

My inspiration for this story came as I was pondering on the state of
modern
automobiles. Some new cars today have digital dashboards, LED displays
that
project onto the windshield, temperature and comfort settings that
cater to
an individual user, and joysticks instead of steering wheels. There is
even
a new model that will parallel park for you!
If you are arrested for a DUI, your car can be set to only operate
after you breathe into a tube; how long until they can read your heart
rate,
brain activity, or body position? Will they someday be able to tell if
you
are having a heart attack and call an ambulance for you?
And the GPS systems that can now track your position; they can be used
by
police to find your car and pinpoint your location. Will they soon be
able
to tell if you are driving erratically? Possibly your car will be able
to
monitor your driving habits; run through a stop sign, and your car
alerts
authorities.
Will we soon have to use fingerprint ID to start our cars, or maybe
submit a
sample of our DNA? Who is your car really loyal to, you or the
authorities?
Will you have to bribe your car with an oil change or a new seat cover?
Cars are changing as society changes. It will be fun and fascinating
to see
what the future holds for our beloved metal friends.
robyn bio...
Mark Robyn lives in Tacoma, Washington with his wife Laura and two boys, Isaiah and Benjamin. A lifelong lover of reading and writing, much of his
inspiration came from his junior high science teacher, a man named Leo
Christofferson. Leo, or .037 as he liked to sign his name, would dispense
with the teaching of science on Fridays and read science fiction stories, illustrated with his own small oil paintings. It was from this unique individual that Mark gained a love of science fiction and writing. Mark has had stories printed in the Writer's Post Journal and on the Toasted Cheese writer's website, but this is his first major story publication.
